Advance Housing, Inc. has won its case for tax exemption! After almost 10 years of litigation the Superior Court reversed the ruling from the lower court and ruled in favor of Advance Housing. A panel of three judges unanimously “conclude that plaintiffs have satisfied all three parts of the three-prong test” which are required for “charitable property tax exemption contained in N.J.S.A. 54:4-3.6.”

At stake is almost a million dollars in property taxes in eleven municipalities in Bergen County. A much larger issue is the ability for Supportive Housing providers across the county to be able to continue to provide services in a cost effective way.

We want to thank all of you for your support over the years. There are many people to thank so a report with more extensive information will be forthcoming after the details of the filing are worked out with our attorneys.

In addition to the two grants announced during the last news update, Advance Housing has received an additional award for a Residential Intensive Support Team (RIST) in Union County. This is a major milestone for Advance Housing, Inc. as we are entering into a County that we have traditionally not provided services in. The Division of Mental Health Services Award is to provide supportive housing services and subsidies to 30 individuals.

Advance Housing, Inc. has received funding from the Englewood Area Community Foundation and the PSE&G Foundation as matching funding for a recently submitted SAMHSA grant. The SAMHSA grant represents a collaboration of County Officials, non-profit, and for-profit organizations. If awarded, the SAMHSA grant can eliminate Chronic Homelessness in Bergen County. Announcements are anticipated in the fall.
